Jet Lag: Everything you need to Know

Posted by on Feb 19, 2014 in Activities | 0 comments

Waiting for flight - Young man sleeping at the airport loungeTraveling is perhaps one of the most exciting things to do to unwind- may it be from the loads of paperwork and outputs from school, to the daily routines of work or even keeping away from the monotony of having to just stay at home. Nothing really compares to the thrill we get from seeing different places and faces– not to mention the experiences we get, which undeniably can bring a rather different kind of fun and relaxation.

On the other hand, we don’t want to get distracted, worse yet, our plans of a wonderful trip be ruined by one of the most common conditions millions of travelers experience, desynchronizes or what we know in layman’s term as jet lag. For many years, jet lag was considered by many as a mere state of mind. However, nowadays, studies have shown that that lag is actually a physiological condition– meaning a natural phenomenon occurring in the body, which results from the alterations of our body clock (also known as the circadian rhythm) as a result of a rapid, long- distance travel (usually from a jet) from east-to-west or west-to-east. Because of this effect on the body, jet lag is hence classified as a circadian rhythm disorder.

Circadian rhythm is the 24 hour cycle in the biochemical, physiological and behavioral process of our body. The word circadian comes from the Latin word “circa” meaning “about”, and the Latin word “diemor dies” meaning “day”.  Our circadian rhythms are driven by an internal time- keeping system which regulates our sleep, waking, eating and regulation of our body temperature. Now, in effect, we experience jet lag if our body encounters problems readjusting our internal biological clock because when traveling to a new time zone, our circadian rhythms are slow to adjust and remain on its original biological schedule. This results in our bodies telling us it is time to sleep, when it’s actually the middle of the afternoon, or it makes us want to stay awake when it is late at night.

People experiencing jet lag exhibits different symptoms depending on the amount of time zone alteration, time of day and individual differences susceptibility. Most common symptoms include daytime fatigue, sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating or functioning at your accustomed level, stomach problems like diarrhea and constipation, muscle soreness, and most often than not, a general feeling of not being well.

Jet lag is definitely something to be considered, most importantly something to be avoided, if we want to assure a happy and complete travel packed with smiles and experiences to be remembered.

Posted by on Feb 3, 2014 in Activities, Scenery | 0 comments

banffOne of the most beautiful places in all of Canada is the Banff National Park. The park has several ideal locations for fishing. The park contains a number of campgrounds, and the park’s rivers and lakes holds abundant amounts of the local fish. This implies that you can make your entire vacation just out of a fishing trip. All fishing activities in the park are regulated by the Parks Canada. It has set a number of regulations and guidelines for those who would wish to do fishing at the park – More Information.

The following is a list of items you will require:

i. reel and rod

ii. tackle

iii. fishing permit

iv. hip waders

v. bait

Step 1

Determine when and where you want to fish. Most of the streams and lakes allow some seasonal fishing from early May to late September. For summer fishermen, Lake Minnewanka and the Bow River are recommended. The river contains a copious amount of brook trout, brown trout and Rocky Mountain whitefish which is very excellent for fly fishermen. While the lake holds plenty of lake trout and whitefish, it also makes an excellent stopover for boat-based fishermen. It is permitted all year-round to do fishing at the Bow River, but no one can ice fish there during the winter season. There are some waters in the park that are closed to fishing: Lake Agnes, the two Fish Lakes, Marvel Lake, Luellen Lake, Castleguard River, the Basin and Cave Marshes, Forty Mile Creek and the tributaries and lakes in Siffleur River Systems and Cleanwater River.

Step 2

Ensure you secure a permit. All the fishermen in the park require either an annual permit or a single-day permit. This can be picked at any of the sauna pools, campground kiosks, information centers or similar places of business like the local tackle shops.

Step 3

Schedule your fishing hours. The permitted time is one hour before sunrise to two hours after sunset. Failure to which you will be subject to penalty. Rou are also not permitted to leave your fishing line unattended, thus bring along your lines when you take a bathroom break or stop for lunch.

Step 4

Familiarize yourself with the restrictions on bait and hooks. For instance, the lead tackle is largely forbidden in the park as waterfall die on eating it. Science in Kingston, Ontario

Posted by on Jan 15, 2014 in Scenery | 0 comments

scienceKingston, Ontario is a small picturesque city that boasts a big name in arts, history and culture. Canada might be a small and young country compared to others in the world, but this baby has many things to offer and be proud of. Kingston, Ontario is now one of the popular tourist destinations in Canada thanks to its designation as a World Heritage Site. The Rideau Canal and its 19th century fortifications are only one of the reasons why it is highly visited, but in truth a tourist favorite because of its 22 museums, historic sites and 3 art galleries. Kingston is probably the only place in Canada with so many venues for display of the varying human interest. If you are a Museum junkie, Kingston will definitely become your sweet haven.

Being known as Canada’s Museum Capital is simply one big shoes to fill, but Kingston has the only bragging rights for it because it has something to offer for everyone. Each and every one of us has varying interests and when you happen to be on a tour or a holiday getaway in Kingston, you do not need to worry on which attractions will be pleasing to your family, friends or travel companions. It is sometimes hard to travel with companions because you need to consider each other’s interest when making travel arrangements but you will not experience this hassle when you are in Kingston.

Other people might find museums to be boring especially when it is the typical science or history museum. But in Kingston, you will never feel bored at all as there are other museums with unique and unexpected showcases. Just like Canada’s Penitentiary Museum that promotes the preservation of Canada’s correctional story. Who would have thought that Canada’s federal penitentiaries has its own museum? This is not a typical subject for a museum but rather a very interesting topic that will easily interest any new comer in Kingston. Canada’s Penitentiary Museum is one minimalist tourist attraction where there are no fees but instead donations in whatever amount are accepted.

Another interesting museum is the Museum of Healthcare at Kingston that tells about Canada’s healthcare system. All over the world, Canada is presently known to provide one of the best healthcare systems to its residents. This did not happen overnight as it took years for Canada to develop a healthcare system that will protect and preserve the health of its people. The Museum helps Canadian to better understand and appreciate their health and health care and provides resource to the general public about the past and present issues regarding health care.

The MacLachlan Woodworking Museum does not only showcase the most extensive, nationally significant collection of woodworking tools in Canada but also offers other activities that can be enjoyed by the family. Guests can participate in the workshop when there are easy constructions like simple carvings. Children are guided by adults and they can bring their crafts home when it’s finished. This Museum is conveniently located near the St. Lawrence River which gives guests another opportunity to try out other stuffs aside from visiting the museum. You can enjoy the sand beach and go for a swim, watch see animals and other wildlife, have picnic or barbecue with the family or explore the park.

These are only some of the museums you will see in Kingston so better plan your travel ahead of time and choose which ones will you visit on your trip.

A Guide to Making Travel Plans

Posted by on Dec 12, 2013 in Caribbean News | 0 comments

travelplans Making travel plans is one of the challenging parts of a trip because there are many considerations that you need to make and you need to strive into making these plans for the success of your trip. If you have difficulty in organizing a travel plan for your upcoming getaway, below are valuable tips that help you in crafting out a fail proof plan.

First of all, you need to be as flexible as you can during the whole course of the planning process. This will mean that you should be open to different options available and not just contain yourself with what you want. Sometimes the things that you aspire are not the things that are available at the current time. It’s like traveling during the peak months but you want the cheapest fares possible. If you are flexible enough, you could opt for traveling at a different day preferably within the middle of the week so that you can have better options in terms of accommodations. Fares and accommodations are cheaper during weekdays and traveling in these dates will save you time, money and effort. It is recommended to book as early as possible to get better rates and more choices.

For air travel, you need to check flight schedules months before the actual travel date. Some airline companies offer deals and discounts when booking in advance and this will give you enough time to craft out your schedule and arrangements. If possible, try to choose flights during the off peak hours where a lesser crowd is traveling. These flights are usually within the middle of the week and during the middle of the night. You could save a few dollars when you make simple sacrifices like traveling in the most inconvenient times of the day. Aside from the time, you can check out different routes to your travel destination. Different airline companies have different rates to different destinations. There are cheaper flights but will have more layovers and will take longer. If you don’t mind traveling for a couple of hours longer, then might as well book a flight without going over the direct route.

In order to have the most savings, you need to look for the best possible deals available. There are many options to plan your trip and you can do this by yourself or hire the services of a travel agent. But remember to keep your options open and research as much as you can before booking anything. You can save money when you have compared all the rates from several vendors from the airline to the hotels or inns within your area of travel. If you are hiring the professional, make sure to include the taxes, fees and charges associated with their services.

If you do not have a very strict schedule to follow, you can device your travel into a basic travel and leave out the extras that will only add to the cost. If you do not want to sacrifice the experience over the cost, then by all means book according to your heart’s desire. In the end, it is still with early and careful planning that you can save money and book all your desired arrangements. Making a travel plans is not difficult at all but you need to exert a little effort into making sure that these plans are achieved.
