Toronto launches first ever Caribbean Week 2007

May 9th, 2007 – Toronto, Canada

The sights, sounds, colours, culture and unique vacation attributes of 30+ Caribbean nations will head to Toronto for Caribbean Week from Wednesday 26th through to Sunday 30th September, 2007.

Arranged by the Canadian arm of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), Caribbean Week 2007 features a series of events highlighting the Caribbean vacation experience, food, entertainment and an on-site Caribbean wedding! Tourism officials, media, artists, performers, celebrities, sponsors and strategic partners will converge on Toronto for a week of Caribbean events.

“The goal of the first ever Caribbean Week in Canada is to give all who participate in the week a taste of the region so they are inspired to visit and plan their next vacation to any of the 30+ Caribbean destinations,” said Susan Webb, CTO representative for Canada. Susan added, “With almost 1 million Canadians of Caribbean decent the culture of the region is imbedded into the multicultural framework of Canada, therefore it’s natural we want to dedicate one week to showcase this vibrant heritage.”

The events include:

Wednesday, September 26 – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. – Dundas Square – A Celebration of the Caribbean
From tasting delicacies to entertainment and dance demonstrations to arts and crafts, this location will serve to launch Caribbean Week to the public.

Thursday, September 27 - 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Media Marketplace – location TBA
The Caribbean Tourism Organization members will take this opportunity to interact with writers from the trade and consumer press.

Thursday, September 27 – 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. International World Tourism Day - Ryerson University
This conference provides comments on the status of sustainable tourism development. The theme this year focuses on women in travel and cuisine.

Thursday, September 27 – 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Caribbean Lifestyles Cooking Classes - LCBO Event Kitchens, Summerhill | The Kingsway | Bayview Village
Caribbean Week will feature 3 renowned chefs from world-class resorts of the Caribbean. These Lifestyle Cooking Classes will showcase distinctive Caribbean dishes at the prestigious LCBO Special Event Kitchens.

Friday, September 28 – 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. – CTO Travel Agent Training – Toronto International Centre
During this information session, travel agents will receive an update on the Caribbean Tourism Organization and the vision for Canada moving forward.

Friday, September 28 First 6 p.m. – midnight - Annual Governments of the Caribbean Gala and Award Presentations – Liberty Grand, Governor’s Room
An elegant black-tie affair, at the Liberty Grand in the Governor’s Room will feature the finest in Caribbean food and entertainment. Highlights of the event will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Awards and a Special Recognition Award.

Saturday, September 29 First 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. – Caribbean Day at the Blue Jays – Roger’s Centre (Toronto vs. Tampa Bay)
The Caribbean Tourism Organization along with The Toronto Star will be celebrating the Caribbean and youth at the Jays. Specially designed entertainment and local celebrities will feature prominently in the afternoon’s events surrounding the baseball game.

Saturday, September 29 – 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. & Sunday 30 – 10 a.m. – 5 p.m - Toronto travel Show, Toronto International Centre
This year the CTO Caribbean Village will be one of the highlights of the Toronto Travel Show, the largest and best attended consumer travel show in Canada. The show has provided the most prominent location for the CTO Caribbean Village that is further enhanced by the Caribbean activities throughout the Village and on the main stage.

One of the highlights will be the results of a 4 month long wedding contest in Today’s Bride magazine and online that will finally culminate in the couple being wed live onstage at the Toronto Travel Show.
